At Gellerman Orthodontics, we’ve been helping patients with their dental-related issues for many years and in that time, we’ve seen the popularity of Invisalign rise exponentially. A large part of this is due not only to the fact that they’re just as effective as traditional braces when it comes to correcting problems like crowded teeth or bite issues, but they’re also far more discreet and comfortable at the exact same time.
When a patient gets traditional braces, a series of metal brackets are attached to each tooth that are themselves connected via a series of metal wires. Periodically, the strength of that wire is adjusted – thus pulling the teeth into the desired positions over time. Again – this is effective and there is nothing wrong with it, but Invisalign brings with it a host of unique benefits that can’t be ignored.
With Invisalign, a 3D image is made of your mouth and a series of clear plastic trays are created to those precise measurements. Every few weeks, a patient will swap out one set of trays for another – each one moving the teeth gently over the duration of treatment. Because those trays are created so intricately, they essentially act as a “second skin” for your teeth. Not only that, but they’re practically invisible – meaning that most people probably won’t even realize you’re wearing them at all unless you come right out and tell them.
The Benefits of Invisalign
In addition to the fact that they’re far more comfortable and low profile than traditional braces, Invisalign offers a number of other benefits, too. For starters, there are virtually no dietary restrictions to speak of. Thanks to the fact that the clear plastic trays can be removed from your mouth, all you have to do is take them out before you eat and put them back in when you’re done. Just be sure to brush and floss before you do, of course.
Likewise, Invisalign trays can also be removed for special occasions or unique circumstances. So if you’re getting pictures taken, you don’t have to worry about having the fact that you were going through treatment immortalized for all time. If you’re an athlete or live a very active lifestyle, you can also easily remove them before a game – just be sure to wear a mouth guard to protect yourself during play.
All told, most people go through Invisalign treatment for between one and two years – although that will obviously vary depending on the exact problems you’re trying to fix.
